Since you mention in your post that compressor is "squeeking", Could it be just a loose belt?. Because if it is a loose built the speed sensor on the compressor will turn it off. Just a thought.
Yes clutch can be repaired, you do not have to scrap the whole compressor, provided that is the only thing failing. I guess your local AC shop should be able to repair the clutch for you.
