If the pinion isn't leaking I'd leave well enough alone.

The problem is that reassembling the pinion nut is hard to judge the proper torque as it really should only be done while crushing the crush sleeve. If you tighten it too much the pinion bearings won't last long. Seen it happen just too many times, even by shops.
