I'd base almost 100% of a transmission replacement diagnosis on what's in the bottom of the oil pan. I have an earlier post about this topic.
No you can't just "shut off" the limp home mode......if it were only that easy! Why do you think that limp home exists? Why would they have this feature if you could simply "turn it off"?
Going by the codes I'd more lean towards a bad solenoid, but I would think the place that looked at it would have mentioned that. But both of the codes are essentially the same, just 1 is sporadic and one is a current code, but the same fault really. You could try finding the bad solenoid, but another possiblity is a bad conductor plate, they were still having problems with the conductor plates in 2000.
Sometimes when replacing the transmission (if it comes to that) MB recommends a new ETC (control unit, or as YOU like to say the "brain"), but the persons logic that "the 'brain' is full" is a bunch of hooey, I don't know if I'm likin' what this guy has to say at all in regards to this problem. Doesn't sound very well versed in transmissions in general and the 722.6 in particular.
I'll have to dig out a book to analyze the adaptation values, ain't happenin' tonight anymore, possibly tomoorow. I'd proceed with caution with this clown.......
