You should never "hold" a car on an incline with the transmission whether automatic or manual transmission. This causes excessive wear inside the transmission if automatic and with the clutch on a manual.

That's why the brake pedal is there.

Use the brake to hold on an incline and don't worry about whether or not the transmission "holds."
