Yeah, no dust filter on one that old. The evaporator is kinda buried in the dash.
You can try an "Autozone" for a spray product like what was mentioned that may help "deodorize" the evaporator case, just follow the instructions on the can. I have also tried running the car with the AC on and pouring a gallon bucket of HOT water with a little liquid Lysol in it down in the intake vents. You'll see the intake vents I'm talking about if you open the hood and look near the wiper arm. You can also just try using Lysol spray or "Oust".
