I had same problem with my 1990 300TE. Replacement of the throttle housing with integral throttle position switch fixed it beautifully thanks to my local independent, Brooklyn Motoren Werke in beautiful downtown Brooklyn, WI (absolutely recommended by the way). Part number was 201.5404.245 I believe but yours may be different...
