W114/115 chassis is the equivalent of the E class, not the C class -- the "baby Mercedes" was first born as the W201 in 1982 -- the W114/115 is the same size as the W124 and W123 chassis, being about 3200 lbs and same dimension, give or take a bit. The other "options" in those days were the S types (for heavy or large) and the limos (600 Grand from 1963 on). SLs don't count...

Whether or not the "baby mercedes" idea worked well is open to debate -- I presonally find them a bit small, and my friend the mechanic says they aren't as good a car, but he's a purist and there do seem to be huge numbers of them around.

The C class isn't the car the W201 is, let alone the W108....
