You really want to check out this feature of the Brickboard. I have made some contributions. They are culled from RWD postings.

http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/

There is a 960 section and these motors, while sturdy and powerful, have a timing belt which needs to be replaced. On later models, check your owners manual, it's 70K miles. Look for a sticker on the front of the belt cover.

Changing the belt is not that hard but, depending on the mileage, you may want to replace the tensioner, tensioner pulley and idler pulley. I just did this on my 960 wagon, 965, and the parts csot me about $375 from the dealer. www.fcpgroton.com has good deals on parts and they are reliable.

http://www.volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php is another Volvo forum. The man who moderates the FWD forum is a Volvo Master service tech who works in Alexandria Va. He does some work on my 960 and V70 when I can't do the job. I alsk him questions on the 960 6 cyl, which is the same as the 5 cyl version but with one more cyl, and he answers my questions. The RWD section isn't as heavily used as the fwd section.

These cars are fast and powerful, lots of low end torque, and cruise really well. I can help you with other questions you may have.
