Perhaps my view is tainted by the fact that I own a 201, but I wouldn’t trade it for a 124. In fact, when I bought it, I looked at a 300E and my current 190E, and selected the 190 because the size just seemed right – the 300 fealt a little big. The 190 is MB’s only true sports sedan. Surely with the 2.3 ltr 4, it’s no drag racer, but the handling is truly sporty. It's hard to say one car is better than the other... they're just different.
As far a build quality between the two cars, it’s worth noting that they share many of the same parts. I’ve seen nothing on my 201 that’s a compromise in quality or workmanship. (I've done a considerable amount of work on my car, and I've done it all myself.)
Just my 2 cents... arguably worth that.
