I've heard those pesky sound before. When my blower fan failed, I've expected the motor finally quit. As it turned out, it was the motor regulator. I thought for a while I was in luck, but the regulator is not at all cheap. Labor is also pricey. I was charged more that 2.5 hours. The regulator sits on top of the motor.
