There were a bunch of lawsuits a year ago against Mercedes, BMW and others over the design of the heater cores. There were a couple threads about it here on the forum, so if you do a search you'll find them. As for repair, it's a case of pulling the center console and dash. While you're in there, you might want to consider changing the vaccum actuators.
