Until the gasoline sells for $5/gal, the more sensible decision is a Corolla over a Prius. Depending on whether you buy new or used, the breakeven point is 50-100K miles before the 'stated' economy of the Prius starts paying for itself. If you drive in a place that the Prius is allowed in commuter lanes with one person aboard, it might be worth the premium.
