I had the same problem on my 300SDL. I loosened the neutral safety switch assembly (two bolts) and rotated it slightly while the gear level was in reverse. Had a helper watch the lights. When the lights came on, I tightened the bolts and now it works great. I didn't have to lower the tranny but the SDL may have more room than a SD. Good luck.
