Gabriel shocks and Monroe shocks are just inferior. A local parts house who specializes in foreign parts outright told me he'd refuse to sell me Gabriel or Monroes for my '68 because they are so crappy... and when a parts house goes that far out on a limb to say something like that, I take their word for it....

The only other good shock for the Merrcedes is Sachs. They are the exact same shock as Bilstein, but under a different name and at a significantly cheaper price. Wherever you are getting the price for the Bilsteins, see if they carry Sachs. I just looked them up, and they run about $10 to $15 each cheaper than Bilstein. Maybe that'll help you....
