I had a similar problem with my 1998 E320. My car shut down while on the highway also. I pulled over and tried to re-start. After about 5 to 10 minutes the car started. I drove directly to the MD dealer where they re-programed the engine computer. I started the car and drove approximately one half mile from the dealer and the car shut down and could not be re-started. I had it towed back to the dealer and they could not get it started.It just kept cranking but would not start. Finally they replaced the engine crank position sensor and all is well. Not sure if you have the same problem but maybe this is a place to start.
