I am thinking of doing an electric fan in my 300td, my clutch is loose when its hot. Let us know how it goes and how much it ends up costing.
Diesels are heat engines, thats why they are so efficient. They don't make as much waist heat as a gasser would. I can easily bring my engine temp down with the heater in the winter, when the temps are in the teens, driving around town.
The only time i can see the electric fan being a problem for the alt is around town in the summer with the a/c cranked. Otherwise it should not be working very often.
Another consern i would have is high speed hot weather driving. I did some experimenting using the stock electric a/c fan on my 240d a few years back. I was looking for some more highway power so i removed the engine fan. There was no noticable power increase but the engine ran noticably hotter pulling hills at 80mph with the a/c on. The a/c fan worked fine around town keeping the engine cool.
