The caliper was off, just the part that holds the pads......and the allen bolt attached to the roter was off. the rotor was moving freely, I just couldn't pull it past the cap. i tried to move the wheel, which helped but not enouph to pull the rotor off.
do I need to take the whole rotor assembly off with the two bolts... they were hard and rusty, it didn't budge.
