You are on to it .... horn contact ring and also the contacts themselves .... I replaced both and the horrible sqeak went away .....

Depending on the year and model, the ring is a replacement piece. I found a used steering wheel (leather) that was in great condition and had a decent ring for less than the cost of a new ring so I bought it.

Geesh ..... "replace it and the airbag won't squeak" ...... weird.
