Ok here's my problem hopefully someone can figure this one out I've been working on it for 3 years and I still have no clue.
I have a 62'220 sb with 2 Solex Paita carbs
the car will not run and no fuel will go all the way through the carbs. either one of them.
I have checked the fuelpump and it is fine, the bowls in the carbs fill up fine , but somewhere between the bowls and the accelerator advance needle no gas is getting through.
The jets are clean, and as far as I know are lined up the way they should be.
Once in awhile I can get the car to sputter, when there is some fuel in the bottom of the carbs.
Putting starter fluid in the carbs makes no difference no sputter or anything.
I'm using new wires, plugs, caps, points and everything is adjusted correctly all except for the distributors timing advance which putting it in the right location makes no difference.
I have taken the carbs apart countless of times and rechecked everything, some of the leather diaphragms could stand to be changed , after 30 years they are a tad stiff but I soaked them in oil and they got their flex back.
I do need to replace the fuel return valve on the primary carb, the pin is too stiff for the accelerator pump to push in. would that make a difference? and the little weight cylinder pump thingies on the back side are about shot, but they are only used for highway driving.
So I doubt they have any relevance to my problem
Nevertheless I am very frustrated with this old crate and I can not figure out for the life of me what is wrong with it. if only I could modify it somehow to run Holly carbs these problems would more than likely be over.
That or junk it.
Any opinions and or ideas would be greatly appreciated
I've checked with the dealer and they dont know how to work on Benz's with carbs nor have any idea's and Solex is no longer a German co. and is now a Japanese company that does not know anything about the older carbs, they only deal with tractor carbs and fuel injector systems.
Thank you,
Jeff
