I'll try to simplify as much as I can:
About the time the W203 (C Class) came out, MB switched to a slightly smaller CD Changer for ALL chassis, because they wanted to offer the glovebox mounted changer in the W203, but they only wanted to market 1 style of CD Changer.
They had the suspension in the CD Changer set to "Horizontal", as this is how it is mounted in the W203.
They came out with adapter brackets so the changer could also be used with the factory brackets on the other chassis, such as the W210 like yours. However, one thing that MUST be done is the CD Changer suspension orientation is changed to "Vertical", otherwise, believe it or not, you can actually end up with the "NO CD Changer" dispaly and so forth, no idea why it does this, but it does.
My other thought is that possibly the internal radio configuration wasn't changed to reflect the addition of the changer, the radio would need to be diagnosed with the SDS computer.
The CD changer can be removed with simple hand tools. Remove the bracket from the body first, disconnect the wiring, then the changer is removed from the bracket.
