i just spoke to my buddy in calif i noticed as i chipped off the finish the color came with it and the zebra wood was extremely pale with only faint signs of stripes.

he confirmed this so if done right it appears you need to stain and possibly a highlight paint for the strips. he is sending me a pint of the stain he used on my other console.

he also mentioned that maybe the first sealer coat had the coloring mixed in. he also said that to see what your original finish looked like was to remove the handle off the ashtray. that's not seen light.
