Prices will depend on local market rates. For my area (near San Francisco), that car you described would go for about $2,000. Six months ago I bought my '84 300D with 155k for $1,200. He initially wanted $3,500, but when I pointed to some light body damage, the need for brake work and the KBB value, I managed to talk him down. Your seller sounds WAY out there.

Last week I saw a '80 300SD with 130k miles for $3,500. It was beautiful. I had the guy talked down to $2,000 but I decided to back out (no room at home for a 4th car). This one is still available if you want to come to SF The good deals are out there. Be patient.

Theswe cars DO make excellent commuter cars. I put about 600 a week on mine.
