Is that pan-sharpened imagery from Quickbird? With satellites, I use mostly G,R,CIR since its usually less affected by haze and gives more vegetation signatures. But for really high resolution in both spectrum and geometry, nothing beats emulsion photography.
See if you can find Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) of you're area. It does some great terrain detail. Using SAR I've found old wagon trails in forest that you cannot see on the ground without a leaf rake.
