Now that I think about it, I couldn't because then it wouldn't return to the radiator and the hose would be pushing "against current" per say. Is there a particular hose I should remove at the back to finish off the flushing?

The hose that I referred to above is at the rear of the head, on the drivers side. You can disconnect it from the hard line and install one of those Prestone "flush T's". This allows you to connect a garden hose to the engine without getting too much water all over everything. You will need a short section of hose and suitable hose clamps to work with the flush T.
