Probably had the instrument cluster swapped in from a U.S. car when it was imported, as was usually done with gray-market cars. Don't 260Es and 300E 2.6/2.8s have a clock and no tach, too?
Another weird thing: ACC! Every other non-US-spec W124 I've seen pictures of has had the manual climate control with the two big dials.
Notice that the importer also swapped in the DOT headlights and removed the Euro headlight wipers. Funny thing is they plugged up the wiper holes instead of replacing the panels, just like the more frugal among us do when changing over to Euro lights!

Pretty cheap job if you ask me, but I've never seen a gray-market car that wasn't all hacked up by the DOT converters.
I wouldn't get too worked up over missing this one. Yes, the manual is nice, but you can convert any W124 to manual if you have the $$$.
