So, you spilled some liquid on your console. Since the shifter is an electrical assembly connected by wiring to the trans, it is indeed kaput.

I think you start by removing the console. Look down into the bottom of the armrest cubbyhole where you may find some screws. I'm just guessing since my '01 C320 with the same shifter and trans is so far unwet.

This is a common denied warranty claim at the dealer. The young blondes in their SLKs spill a latte on the console which creates a one-speed transmission.
