I still don't think that you can compare the S430 with the 740. MB doesn't just sit around and say, hmmm BMW has a new v-8, lets build one with the exact same displacement and see if we can't get better performance out of it. In the end I think it all comes down to marketing. MB's buyers are different from BMW's buyers, so the cars are built to different specs.
