I've never before heard of anyone dropping the steering wheel for this job. I think the manual recommends removing the ignition lock/switch to make clearance for the heater box. It's one small bolt, if memory serves.

I looked at that and took the one allen screw out, but the ignition didn't want to come out,,,, didn't look like there was clearance enough anyhow. Dropping the column only took about 2 minutes.
