The most expensive iPod is the one with the most memory, 40 Gb, which costs $399.00. There are smaller ones, the smallest of which is 20 Gb, I think.
The cables connect one of two ways: via the same connection that your CD changer plugs into the back of the head unit, or via RCA jacks that would plug into an auxillary input at the back of the head unit.
The CD changer plug-in is the best way because it allows you to use the CD control functions on the head unit to change songs. If you have a popular aftermarket head unit, like Pioneer, Sony, or Alpine, chances are good the company that makes the interface cables make a cable that will plug into the back of the headunit. Cables are also available for newer factory head units.
I have a high end Nakamichi unit, which means the cable isn't made, so I plug mine into one of the two auxillary inputs in the back of the head unit.
I still get perfect sound, but I have to use the iPod to toggle between songs.
