Problem fixed.
It looks like the issue was with the MAF. After a swap, from a generous guy in the neighborhood with a 95, the car smoothed out and runs great.
The mistery is, no fault codes pointed conclusively to the MAF being the problem. So I'd say, I'm more of a lucky guy than a deliberate problem solver.
Thanks for the help Mr. Dalton. Not just on this post alone, but for your responsed on all other posts with a similar nature. Where would we all be without Steve Brotherton's and your (and other's) valuable knowledge and the generousity with which you share it?
PS (avmech) Replaced harness two days after my first spark plug change on the newly bought car with ~100K

That's when I understood why the car was such a bargain!
