I did a number of searches and found some good advice on how to repair the odometer myself, but eventually came across advice from Haasman and Steve Brotherton (both of whom post good info here) that led me to the conclusion I would be better off having the repair done professionally. (I normally do most of the work on my Benz, but it sounded like the pro repair would last longer and I plan on driving my Benz for another couple of decades.) Steve Brotherton (who owns Continental Imports in Florida and is a moderator on this site - and about whose shop I had seen other favorable comments) repairs these (actually, his brother Scott does the repairs). The repair price is similar (nominally higher) to what you will find elsewhere on e-bay and I felt more comfortable going with Steve and Scott, based on the fact they are forum members and the other positive responses I had seen on Continental Imports from other members.

Scott will also change out the bulbs and re-paint indicator needles if you need.

I am very pleased with the repair they did on mine (I mailed the entire instrument panel, as opposed to speedo only, as the speedo is protected better that way) and would recommend this approach wholeheartedly.

One final point I learned during my search - to get longest possible life out of your odometer/trip odometer gears, do not reset when car is moving; do so before starting on your trip, before you leave gas station, etc. - while your car is stationary.
