How will extended inactivity affect Bilsteins?

I just put new bilsteins on the rear of the fintail today. I can say there is a perceptible difference between those on the rear and the Sach's on the front. You can just tell they are something better.
Anyway, I was going to put the old rear shocks back on for the 3-4 year hibernation but I had to hacksaw one of the threaded tops off to get the shock out. Speaking of which, what does everyone here use to arrest the shock absorber shaft while trying to turn the locknuts? They put that stupid mis-shapen end on the shock when they could have just put a allen/socket-compatible tip to make things easy.
Vise grips have worked fine so far, but this one stripped badly.

So, will long inactivity ruin the shock? At least I've got the warranty.

Thanks
