I once painted an 88 with good results. I cleaned it up with paint remover I think. Sanded down the rough spots, taped it up a little, painted it with black high heat paint in a spray can, and it still looked great three years later when I sold it. I had no trouble getting the paint to stick - of course I got the surface very clean. If it's a uniform color you just don't notice little imperfections once it's back on the car.
