Usually the factory amplifier craps out.
Cleaner sound comes from better drivers (speakers) and more (clean) power.
Premium system is 10 speakers as I recall. 6 in the rear, 2 in the doors, 2 in the dash.
Now the way to go about this can vary greatly. If ya do, go with a new head unit that will provide good power output. It's still deck power but will be more than sufficient for your needs. Usually about 44-50watts peak power will do about 15-18rms.
I'd look for one that'll support sat radio for the future as well as alternate forms media capacity... MP3, WMA, etc. Just incase.
Oh yes, speaker wise... listen to some. See what you like. Polks sound nice to me but really love power. Look for products with a high sensitivity level as they will play better with lower power input
