got a small problem. on my 87 420 removing the radio is a piece of cake. 2 small clips on the underside and it's out. However..... on my 88 420 it already has an after market radio. it's a panasonic with single CD and removable face plate.

Sorry.
It is rare for me to touch an after market radio beyond 1974.
The type with removable face plate some times have an anti theft anchor in back.
Consult your local radio installer, and look in "Car Audio"
