I there's a CV problem you'll know about it even if the 4Matic is not operating - I had one about a year ago in my '92 300TE 4Matic and I have the other axle starting up now! And, for the record, both cases had/have no vibration, only noise and they varied/vary depending on temp., speed, steering wheel position and even road surface.
