Go to the screen that shows the NUMBER of satellites you are receiving and see how many you are getting when this is happening. If it is more than 3 or 4 and the nav doesn't know where you are any closer than that, I'd say it's hardware, bad GPS receiver. I'd also verify this with a test call to the Teleaid response center.
To explain this to the technician so he will understand it, i would say "The Nav system is off by a country mile".
I went to training in Ontario, I was at the outlet mall, the same company owns one in Gurnee, IL, called Gurnee Mills, there is a street around that mall in Ontario named after it, Gurnee Mills Dr? Something like that. Now you know why it's called that.
