Couple ?s about wiring in '91 300E

Hey fellas, I was hoping I could get some advice/tips for my 1991 300E... anything you guys could chime in would be great. I am not very knowledgeable about car audio.

One of my stock speakers is only working intermittently. The speaker in question is the one in the dash on the driver's side. I believe (?) the problem is the wiring, since I checked the connector 6" from the speaker and found no voltage or current.

The speaker in the drivers side door works fine... so the question is, where do those two wires connect? If I am thinking correctly, the problem must be in the junction, or in the wire between the junction and the dash speaker. What would be the easiest way to fix this?

On a related note, I just replaced the stock stereo with a new Sony 8815 (the speaker problem predated this installation). To put it in I ran four strands of speaker wire to the trunk and spliced into the factory speaker wires there, bypassing the factory amps - yeah, probably not the greatest way but it was the easiest way.

From reading some of the other posts in this forum I am wondering if I have an impedance problem and need to get new speakers to make everything sound good? The bass is pretty unexciting (and I know the stero probably isn't that great - but I think it should sound better than it does).

Thanks!
