it sounds like the problem lies between the accelerator and steering wheel (ie you)

It doesn't sound as though you're experiencing any mechanical or electronic troubles, just that you wish (or thought) that the car was faster than it is. Are you hitting the kickdown switch to drop the tranny to lower gears?
