Check the sites of all major Diesel engine manufacturers. Send then an e-mail. give them the old college science/term paper, etc. story and I bet that they will bury you in info.
The basic reasons why Diesel engines are better than gas are;
1. More torque. More torque equals more useable power equals more production.
2. Stronger engines. Stronger engines equal longer lasting engines equals less maintenance equals less down time equals cheaper operating costs.
3. Better fuel economy. Equals lower operating costs.
4. Cheaper fuel. Large Diesels, esp. marine types can run on #2 marine Diesel or bunker fuel. Much cheaper than gas
5. Safer fuel. Diesel fuel is considerably less flamable than gasoline and therefore much safer. Very important in a marine enviroment.
6. More ruggid engines. Since Diesels don't have carburetors or ignition systems they can operate in areas and under conditions that would stop a gas engine.
Good luck
