IIRC, the '80 will have engine oil system lubricating the IP, whereas the 77 may not. To check, look on the '77 IP for an oil filler cap marked "OEL". If it doesn't have one, it should be directly compatible.

If anyone has experience with the '77, I would be happy to be informed of any differences between the IPs on thses models.
They both have a small oil line on the drivers side of the IP. Both engines have 617.912 12, then the wagon has 6 digits for the serial #(matches the engine # it originally came with, as per that Russian website), and the 300D doesn't have a serial number after it, so I'm assuming it is a replacement engine?
The only thing I did notice is the wagon has 135bar injectors, and the '77 sedan has 115bar injectors. (by the way, the PO said a full tank of fuel hasn't even been run through those injectors since they were rebuilt)
I'm paying to have it installed, via the recommendation of a few on the site here, and the labor aint cheap boys....
I got the one out of the parts car in about an hour even, but the oil filter assy is lower left, where the AC compressor is on the wagon. Mechanic said the oil lines have to come off to get the IP on/off.
