I think a diesel does shut off with vacuum. Repair the hose if you broke it. If it is a plastic line use a piece of rubber hose to patch it, if it is a rubber on, use a plastic hose piece to link them together. If you pulled the hose out of the firewall then you need to get up under the dash and see where it is connected, my guess would be near the ignition switch somewhere, but if you post on the diesel forum those guys will know more than me!
