Your '95 has a knock sensor that will retard the timing and keep the engine out of detonation. Your '86 does not.
I use 87 PON durilng the winter and have no detonation, but as temperatures warm up, there is some transient detonation, especially if I short shift and get on the throttle quickly. I think it's just a lag in the vacuum advance pulling back, but I can "drive around" the problem by shifting at higher revs or feeding the throttle in at a slower rate.
