Nope any diesel CAT, detroit, Mann whatever. Overheating will kill any engine, have you ever seen a piston expand and score the cylinder wall?
Poor fuel will kill any IP or injectors. Actually the last time I was at the diesel shop I use that went through my injectors the lady their had a great story. Some guy bought a new GM truck with a Duramax diesel, gets his second tank of fuel and the trunk wouldn't start! I guess he got some real bad fuel it was loaded with water and crap. He needed to have his injectors cleaned, but I think the IP was ok.
No air filter will destroy any engine. Actually a forum member is rebuilding a 617 (616 maybe?) where the po left off the filter and it lost compression.
Pull off your air filter, drain your coolant, and throw a little water in your tank and head down a nice dusty road. See how far that gets you.
