One of my keys is pretty scratched up on the lens area too. I believe that is the lens for the summer thingy where you can point it at the driver door and hold down the unlock button and it opens the sunroof and rolls down the windows. If you do the same except hold down the lock button it will close the sunroof and roll up the windows.

Experiment #2. I covered up the red lens and attemped to start the car. The key fit in but the usual "click" wasn't heard. Also, the key would not turn. Therefore, I am highly doubtful that was the issue.
