It's the sweet-tasting mushroom in the pictures that Medmech posted. They are hollow but have a firm, crispy wall. They are most abundantly found in old growth hardwood forests in the northern tier of states (though they do make it into NE TX, LA, MS, AL, and NW GA.). Interestingly, there's a cultural component, too. Folks of British and Spanish extraction in the USA are less likely to think of fungi as food while folks of Korean, N Chinese, N Japan, and Eastern Europe are quite likely to enjoy collecting wild mushrooms for food. This gets a small number of people, especially Koreans, in some trouble in the USA because there's a look-alike fungus in the USA, which looks like a Korean fungus, that is deadly. It's in the "Death Angel" group. Almost certain death if not addressed early in the poisoning.
The kind that AKLIM was talking about contain a psychotropic drug and grow primarily on cow dung in moist, cool weather. They taste so foul that you gota really want a buzz to eat them. Plus, they have chemicals in addition to the ones some folks like that have got to be emetic because most people get somewhat to severely nauseated after ingesting only few (3-4) fresh mushrooms. But the buzz is wild and long lasting. Folks who are into spelunking through the detritus of their subconscious believe it is worth the puke factor.
Oh, the dung-growing mushrooms are illegal. It's a felony. Don't do it. Puke and get busted and ruin your life for a buzz?
