Our '96 had a bulb-out problem. Bulb was good, the holder had been mis-inserted into the housing, causing some of the printed-circuit-like conductor to crack away. No amount of readjusting the tabs on the bulb holder would help.

Have a close look at the socket/holder, and the housing for signs of abuse.
