When the harmonic balancer came apart on one of my old 240D's, it as less than 15 seconds from the alt light coming on, the gauge pegging, and massive quantities of steam.
It's your car. However, if it were me, I'd fork over the $353, and just fix it before you find out how quick your reflexes can be.
