380Sl no start problem

The car had a history of too rich at start-up, but adjusting the mixture left it too lean warm, so I disassembled the warm-up compensator, found the little metal disc dirty and the smaller fuel fitting clogged. Cleaning it improved everything, but this year as the weather got warmer, the rich at start up problem reappeared. I took the W/U comp apart again, but found it pretty clean. Here is where things turned ugly. On the center plate of the comp, there is a plunger made into a diaphragm, which yours truly didn't think was actuating very well. I tried to clean and get it to move, but apparently too much, as upon reassembly, I now have a no start situation. It fires but coughs and dies immediately. If I keep trying a few times, it will turn without firing. This post is way too long to ask this: can the compensator cause a no start? I would think this has to be the problem, since that's all I did. With a $600+ price tag on FastLane, I'm a little worried.....Thanks
