Look in your trunk - your shock may have punctured through the carpeting in there. This happened to me after the right rear tire hit a real nasty pothole. The shock mount failed, and the chrome rod of the shock puntured right through the carpet in the trunk!

You may have to pull back the carpet to see the damage.
